While contacts are very useful for vision, if the materials are not properly cleaned and maintained, it can be potentially damaging to eyes. Make sure your contacts are the right prescription and that you follow all instructions provided by your health care professional.

To take good care of your eyes, eat more omega-3 fatty acids. Make sure your diet has the right nutrients in it. Foods rich in omega-3 fats include halibut, tuna, salmon and dark, leafy green vegetables. You want to have at minimum a serving of one of these foods each day.

A major way to protect the eyes is by wearing sunglasses. UV rays can really hurt the eyes, even when it is cloudy out. When you choose your shades, look for ones that have UV protection. Sunglasses that offer UV protection cost a little more; however, they protect your eyes.

When doing any type of work, avoid injuring your eyes by always wearing protective glasses. This is especially important if you job entails handling airborne or hazardous materials. You should also wear protective eye wear when playing sports since certain sports such as racquetball, lacrosse or hockey can cause eye injuries.

Quit smoking immediately. Smoking is terrible for your eyes as it will restrict the blood flow that you need to keep your eyes functioning properly. Additionally, smoking can disrupt your immune system, which is needed to flush out the free radicals in your body. This will make you feel better while improving the health of your eyes.
